Nobody prepares you for the NICU. You go into pregnancy expecting a certain kind of beginning — and then your baby arrives early, and suddenly everything you planned goes out the window. The machines, the tubes, the tiny hands, the questions you weren’t ready to ask. One of the most common is about feeding.

Why Premature Babies Have Different Nutritional Needs

A full-term baby spends around 40 weeks developing inside the womb — building fat stores, absorbing nutrients from the placenta and preparing their digestive system for life outside. A baby born prematurely misses some or all of that final phase of preparation.

The result is a baby whose digestive system is less mature, whose fat stores are lower, whose immune system is still developing and whose caloric needs are proportionally higher than a full-term baby. This is why standard infant formula is not appropriate as the primary nutrition source for a premature or low birth weight baby.

Higher Calories
More energy per kg of body weight for catch-up growth

💪
More Protein
Elevated protein density for rapid tissue development

🧠
Higher DHA & ARA
Brain & visual development that should have occurred in the womb

🦴
Calcium & Phosphorus
Optimised ratios for bone development outside the womb

What Makes Premature Formula Different?

A good premature infant formula is specifically engineered around the elevated needs of early-born babies. The differences go well beyond simply having more calories.

🍼 Key Features of a Quality Premature Formula

Higher caloric density per 100ml — provides more energy without requiring larger feed volumes that could overwhelm a small stomach

Elevated protein content — supports catch-up growth while remaining digestible for an immature gut

High DHA and ARA — meets brain and visual development needs that premature babies have in greater amounts than full-term infants

Added nucleotides — to support immune function in a baby whose immune system is still developing

Low osmolarity — reduces stress on immature kidneys and digestive systems; high osmolarity formulas cause discomfort and are harder for preemies to tolerate

Prettylac Pre — Designed for the Earliest Arrivals

Prettylac Pre is our premature and low birth weight infant formula, designed for babies from 0–12 months who were born early or with a low birth weight.

It provides high energy and protein density to support caloric needs without overloading the digestive system. DHA and ARA content is elevated to meet the brain and visual development needs that premature babies have in greater amounts. Nucleotides are included to strengthen immunity, and the formula is produced with a low osmolarity to be as gentle on immature systems as possible.

The fat proportion is optimised so that approximately 45% of energy comes from fat — within the recommended range for the youngest and most vulnerable infants, meeting the requirements set for babies 0–6 months.

Important: Prettylac Pre and all formulas in our Special and Medical range are products for specific nutritional needs. Always use them under the guidance of your neonatologist or paediatrician, who will advise on the right formula, amounts and timing for transition back to standard formula as your baby grows.

When to Transition Back to Standard Formula

Most premature babies are gradually transitioned back to a standard infant formula as they reach their corrected age milestones and their weight catches up with full-term growth charts. This transition is always guided by your medical team and is based on your baby’s individual growth progress rather than a fixed timeline.

When the time comes, our Prettylac Basic Stage 1 or Prettylac Premium Stage 1 provide excellent ongoing nutrition for babies moving on from premature formula.
