What Are DHA and ARA?
DHA
The primary structural fat found in the brain’s grey matter and the retina of the eye. Critical during the first two years of life when brain development is at its fastest.
ARA
Works alongside DHA in brain cell signalling, immune function and healthy inflammatory response. Both are found naturally in breast milk.
Both are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids — a type of healthy fat — and both are found naturally in breast milk. They’re not interchangeable with ordinary fats. DHA and ARA have a very specific and critical role in early childhood development, particularly in the brain, nervous system and eyes.
When a baby is breastfed, DHA and ARA are naturally present in the mother’s milk. When a baby is formula-fed, the formula needs to provide them — which is exactly why including DHA and ARA in baby milk formula isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s essential.
What Does the Research Say?
📚 Evidence-Based Benefits of DHA in Infant Formula
- Measurable improvements in visual acuity in babies who receive adequate DHA in year one
- Better problem-solving ability and cognitive outcomes at 18 months and beyond
- Improved language development scores in longitudinal studies of formula-fed infants
- EU food safety authorities mandate DHA in all infant formula sold across Europe
- DHA makes up a significant portion of the brain’s grey matter — it is literally brain-building material
European food safety authorities consider DHA important enough that it is a mandatory ingredient in all infant formula sold in the EU. Every formula in the Prettylac range — from Stage 1 through to Stage 3 — includes DHA and ARA in amounts designed to support your baby’s development at each stage.
DHA and ARA in Prettylac Premium
In our Prettylac Premium range, the DHA and ARA formulation goes even further. Premium Stage 1, 2 and 3 combine DHA and ARA with GOS, FOS, Nucleotides and Lutein — creating a more comprehensive support system for brain function, gut health and visual development.
Lutein is worth a special mention. It’s a carotenoid found in breast milk that concentrates in the macula of the eye and supports visual development and clarity. Not all formulas include it — but Prettylac Premium does.
How to Spot a Quality DHA Source
Not all DHA in formula is the same. The best sources come from algal oil or fish oil — natural, well-researched sources that the body absorbs effectively. When reading formula labels, look for DHA listed clearly as Docosahexaenoic Acid or DHA oil, ideally near the top of the supplementary ingredients list rather than buried at the bottom.
At Prettylac, we are transparent about what goes into every tin. You can find the full ingredient breakdown for each product in our Basic and Premium ranges on the product pages.
The Bottom Line
DHA and ARA are not marketing buzzwords. They are two of the most researched and well-supported ingredients in paediatric nutrition. If you’re choosing an infant formula in the UAE for your baby, ensuring it contains adequate DHA and ARA is one of the most important checks you can make.
